Free Choice and Exhaustification: an Account of Subtrigging Effects
نویسنده
چکیده
The goal of this article is to explain the distribution and meaning of qualsiasi/qualunque in the examples in (1). Universal FC items will be analysed as indefinites (contra Dayal, 1998). Following Aloni (2002, to appear) and Kratzer and Shimoyama (2002), I will assume that indefinites induce sets of propositional alternatives. The interpretation of FC items like qualsiasi will further crucially require the application of two covert operators over these sets: a universal propositional quantifier [∀] and an operator exh of exhaustification.

negation) but behave otherwise like weak NPIs. 4.5. Summary and conclusions. This chapter has investigated a series of serious challenges to our guiding idea that NPIs are weakest scalar elements with obligatorily activated alternatives. Some maybe interesting results have come out of these challenges. Perhaps the main ones are three. First, to solve a problem that led to a blatantly wrong pred...
متن کاملRescuing Existential Free Choice Items in Episodic Sentences
Note here that this subtrigging strategy does not work for all types of FCIs. Chierchia (2005) points out that, in Italian, subtrigging rescues the universal type of FCI qualsiasi, but not the existential counterpart uno qualsiasi. The same contrast holds for other Romance languages like Spanish: adding a relative clause improves the universal FCI cualquier in (4), but not the existential FCI u...
متن کاملObligatory Neg-raising in Mandarin: Negatives and Aspects
This paper offers an explanation to the obligatory neg-raising (NR) phenomenon with Mandarin negative bu. This explanation follows Xiang’s (2014) exhaustification-based account for (non-)NR, that non-NR readings are derived via local exhaustification or double exhaustification. Based on mixed evidence from both syntax and semantics, especially the interactions between negatives and aspects, I a...
متن کاملVariation in English Free Choice Items
There has been significant progress in our understanding of Free Choice any and of -ever free relatives in recent years. Very often, however, the investigation of these two Free Choice Items (FCI) in English has been conducted in parallel. One of the aims of this paper is to bring the two strands together in a way that can account for commonalities and differences between them and, perhaps, a t...
متن کاملChildren interpret disjunction as conjunction: Consequences for theories of implicature and child development*
We present evidence that preschool children understand disjunctive sentences as if they were conjunctive. The result holds for matrix disjunctions as well as disjunctions embedded under every. At the same time, there is evidence that children understand or as inclusve disjunction in downwardentailing contexts. We propose to explain this pattern of results by assuming that the child knows the in...
